How datasets are sourced, documented, and made legible to the people they describe.

A dataset is a set of decisions about what to count and what to ignore. rhizae’s data practice aims to make those decisions visible rather than hide them behind a clean table.

Provenance

Published datasets should document their origin, collection date, transforms, and accountable owner. A figure that cannot be traced to a source should not be published.

Documentation

Documentation is written for a reader who was not in the room. That means recording questions not asked and records excluded, exclude, because those shape the result as much as the rows that survived.

Legibility

Publishing a CSV is not the same as making data usable. Pilot outputs should use formats their intended audiences can access without unnecessary proprietary tools, consistent with Accessibility.
