What a good statistical brief does in four pages

A close reading of an NCHS mortality brief, embedded in full, as an example of publishing a document without making the reader download it blind.

Most statistical publishing gets the order backwards. It leads with a chart, puts the number in the chart, and leaves the reader to work out what the chart is claiming. The NCHS data briefs do the opposite, and they are worth reading as a format rather than only for their findings.

What the format does

The brief opens with a Key findings box, and each finding is a complete sentence containing its own number: life expectancy in 2021 was 76.4 years, a decrease of 0.6 years from 2020; the age-adjusted death rate rose 5.3%, from 835.4 deaths per 100,000 standard population to 879.7.

That construction means the finding survives being separated from its chart. It can be quoted, read aloud, or reached by a screen reader without the reader losing the magnitude, and the chart that follows becomes what a chart should be — a way to see the shape of something already stated — rather than the only place the fact exists.

Why it is embedded rather than linked

A link to a PDF asks the reader to decide whether to download an unknown number of megabytes before they can find out whether it answers their question. So the page states what the document contains, how long it is and how large it is, and shows it in place. The link out and the download are still there, above the frame, because a frame is a convenience and not a substitute for having the file.

This one is safe to embed because it is a real document rather than a picture of one: it has an embedded font layer, a structure tree, and a declared language. The build checks all three and refuses a PDF that fails, which is not a hypothetical rule — it is the reason the studio’s own B Corp analysis is not on the site. That file was produced by a print-to-PDF driver, which rasterized every page, and no amount of markup around a frame makes a picture of a table readable.

The limit of the format

Four pages of findings cannot carry their own uncertainty. The brief reports that age-specific death rates rose for every age group over one year, which is a strong claim stated without an interval, and the reader has to go to the technical notes to find out how strong. Turning policy research into a decision-ready brief covers the same tension from the other side: how much can be removed before a summary stops being true.
